Can You Open a Spanish Bank Account Without an NIE?

Publicado el octubre 12, 2026

Sometimes, but it is not the norm. Most Spanish banks ask for an NIE (the tax ID for foreigners) because they must identify customers and report tax information. A few banks, mainly digital ones or some branches that serve non-residents, may open a limited account with just a passport and ask for the NIE later. If you cannot get an NIE yet, you can also use a neobank or money app as a temporary solution. The most reliable path is to apply for the NIE first.

1. What is the NIE and why do banks ask for it?

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the identification number Spain gives to foreigners for tax and administrative purposes. It appears on residence documents and is used for contracts, property purchases, taxes and employment.

Banks ask for it for three main reasons:

  • Identification: Spanish banks must verify the identity of every customer under anti-money-laundering rules.
  • Tax reporting: banks report information on account holders to tax authorities. A tax identification number makes that process possible.
  • Consistency: the NIE links your account to other Spanish records (property, utilities, salary).

Because of this, a bank that opens an account without an NIE is taking on extra administrative work, which is why many refuse.

2. So, can you open an account without one?

The honest answer is: it depends on the bank, the branch and your situation.

  • Some banks require an NIE in every case.
  • Some banks accept a passport and a foreign address for an initial or limited account, and then require the NIE within a set period.
  • Digital banks and neobanks often onboard customers with a passport or national ID and a selfie or video check, sometimes without a Spanish NIE, but they may issue an IBAN from another country.

There is no single official rule that applies to every bank, so you should not assume that what worked for someone else will work for you. Treat any «yes» as something to confirm in writing or by email before you rely on it.

3. Situations where it may be possible

These cases are more likely to succeed, though never guaranteed:

  • Non-resident account at a bank used to foreign customers, especially in areas with many foreign owners or visitors.
  • Short-term or limited account where the bank asks you to provide the NIE later.
  • Online or app-based banks that verify identity digitally.
  • EU or EEA citizens who can use a national ID card, which some banks accept as ID.
  • Customers with a clear, low-risk profile, for example a salaried person from another EU country with documents showing a stable address abroad.

Even in these cases, expect the bank to ask for the NIE at some point.

4. Situations where it is unlikely

An NIE is usually mandatory when you want:

  • A full resident account, with salary domiciliation, direct debits and a Spanish card.
  • A mortgage or loan, or any credit product.
  • To receive a Spanish salary or pension, since your employer or payer needs your tax ID.
  • To link the account to a property, because purchases and taxes require an NIE.
  • To pay Spanish taxes or to handle official procedures.

If any of these applies, plan to get the NIE first.

5. Your options if you have no NIE yet

Option 1: Ask banks that accept a passport

Contact two or three banks and ask directly: «Do you open accounts for non-residents without an NIE, and what are the limits?» Do it by email so you have a written answer. Bring this answer with you to the appointment.

Option 2: Use a neobank or money app temporarily

These apps usually do not require a Spanish NIE. You can hold euros, pay by card and receive transfers. The trade-off is that the IBAN may be from another country, and some Spanish landlords, utilities, employers or authorities may refuse it for direct debits or payroll. It is a good bridge while you arrange the NIE.

Option 3: Get the NIE first

This is the most reliable route. Section 7 explains the common ways to apply.

Option 4: Use a representative

A lawyer, gestoría or authorised representative in Spain can help with the NIE application or with opening the account on your behalf, usually with a power of attorney. This adds cost and requires trust, so choose carefully and keep the scope of authority narrow.

Option 5: Keep your home bank account and a multi-currency card

If you only stay briefly, this can be enough without opening a Spanish account at all.

6. Risks of opening without an NIE

  • Limited functionality: the account may not allow direct debits, a card or online banking until you supply the NIE.
  • Blocking or closure: if you do not provide the NIE by the deadline set by the bank, it may restrict or close the account.
  • Tax reporting problems: missing tax ID information can create complications for both you and the bank.
  • Mismatch with other records: the bank may update your file later, requiring documents again.
  • Scams: be wary of anyone who promises to «get you an account without any documents» for a fee. Reputable providers explain what is required and do not ask for your PIN or online banking codes.

Always read what the bank asks you to sign and ask for the deadline for providing the NIE.

7. How to get an NIE quickly

Rules and waiting times vary, so check the current procedure with the Spanish consulate or the relevant office before you travel.

  1. Identify the right route: non-residents commonly apply through a Spanish consulate in their home country, at a police office that handles foreigner matters in Spain, or via an authorised representative.
  2. Prepare documents: passport, the application form, proof of why you need the NIE (for example a property purchase, a job offer or a bank requirement) and any fee payment receipt required.
  3. Book an appointment where required. In some regions availability is limited, so check regularly.
  4. Attend or send your representative with the original documents.
  5. Receive the certificate that shows your number. Keep a copy: banks ask for it.

If you are applying as a resident, your NIE is part of your residence documentation.

8. Questions to ask the bank

Before you go, ask:

  1. Do you accept customers without an NIE? For my nationality and residence?
  2. If yes, what are the limits (card, direct debits, online banking)?
  3. What is the deadline for providing the NIE?
  4. Can I start the process online or do I need to visit a branch?
  5. Which documents do you need instead (passport, proof of address abroad, proof of income)?
  6. Will the account be closed if I do not provide the NIE in time?
  7. Are there extra fees for non-residents?

Get answers in writing when possible.

9. Frequently asked questions

Do I need an NIE to open a bank account in Spain?

Most banks require one. A few may open a limited account with a passport and request it later. Check each bank.

Can tourists open a Spanish bank account?

Sometimes, but many banks prefer customers with a clear link to Spain, such as property, work or study. Short-term visitors usually do better with a foreign card or a neobank.

Can I open an account online without an NIE?

Some digital banks and neobanks allow it, but they may use non-Spanish IBANs, and some Spanish institutions may not accept them for every purpose.

How long does it take to get an NIE?

It can range from days to several weeks depending on the route, region and appointment availability.

Can a bank refuse me for not having an NIE?

Yes. Banks can set their own requirements within the law. If you are refused, try another bank or branch, or get the NIE first.

Is the NIE the same as the TIE or the residence card?

No. The NIE is a number. The TIE or residence document is a card that includes the NIE and proves your legal status.

Can I use a Spanish IBAN from a neobank?

Some neobanks offer IBANs from other countries rather than Spanish ones. Check what IBAN you actually receive and whether the people you pay accept it.
